Adding Binaural Audio

As part of the multi channel project, I have decided upon adding binaural audio into the soundscape. While this is a recording technique designed to add depth and while listened to on headphones, gives distance and 360 deg sound, just as we would perceive sound normally with our ears. I felt that this within the multi channel project would add a different type of element to the sound, adding something for the listener if they were to listen with headphones.

For this I used the Roland Binaural CS-10EM mic/earphone 2n1 device and a hand held recorder which just sits within the ear.

For the element I wished to record for the soundscape, this involved myself walking on a stone covered ground, followed by me entering a car, going through the switch on process before starting the engine and driving away.

The CS-10EM's were able to record the walking on stones, start up of the car and drive away without any issues. The only area that it could not handle was the pressure change that happened when the car door was closed, causing it to go beyond its capabilities. For this segment a change of recording equipment was required, in this case, the use of the Sennheiser MKH-418s mounted within a Rode Blimp which was able to handle the change of pressure caused by the door closing.
