Risk Assessment

In April I had the opportunity to do a live recording with the folk acoustic duo of Karin Grandal-Park & Rosie Clegg. This came about after making contact with David Wood who runs the Ulverston Live Music club in the Lake District, which tied in nicely with an Easter Break to Windermere.

Karin has a background of Jazz and blues for around 30 years now and recently made the move into the folk scene, teaming up with Rosie Clegg, a long standing member of the folk scene.

The setup involved for the recording was an ORTF stereo pair using the Neumann KM184 Microphone in a matched pairing.

The challenge involved for this recording was in making sure an ideal distance from the performers was in place so that the recording would not sound too distant thus making sure that any reverberant room sound did not overpower the recording by making it have too much echo.

The only real challenge that came from the recording that evening was during an XY Stereo mic setup recording people started to come into the room making lots of noise. This was resolved by delaying entry into the room and keeping the room silent.

Health and Safety requirements had to be considered as well before recording could start, thus safe cable routing between the mics and the portable recorder was made sure of by routing the cabling along the front edge of stage minimising the chance of any trips.
